What to Wear to a Graduation

Graduations often involve long periods of sitting, walking, and waiting, sometimes outdoors. Check the venue and forecast, then choose a dress that works under a gown if you will wear one. Bulky sleeves, large collars, or very full shoulders can bunch beneath academic robes, so a smoother upper silhouette may be easier.

Consider the hem in relation to stairs, seating, and the gown length. A midi or knee-length dress can be practical, but the best length is one you can move in comfortably. Lightweight fabrics can help in warm weather, while a cardigan or jacket offers flexibility if the ceremony is held in an air-conditioned hall or cool outdoor space.

Footwear deserves special attention. You may cross lawns, climb steps, or stand for photographs, so stable shoes can be more useful than a pair chosen only for appearance. If you prefer dressier shoes, practice walking in them and consider carrying a comfortable alternative for travel.

For photographs, choose a color or pattern you enjoy and avoid details that will be hidden by the gown. Keep accessories secure and manageable, especially if you will be carrying flowers, a program, or a bag. Above all, choose an outfit that lets you focus on celebrating the graduate rather than adjusting your clothes throughout the day.
